The meaning behind the cryptic messages Carlos Alcaraz wrote on the cameras after his matches at the 2024 Indian Wells Open has been revealed.
Streaming giants Netflix have announced two-time Grand Slam champion Alcaraz will be the star in a documentary series which will air on the platform in 2025.
Alcaraz sparked much speculation among tennis fans with the messages he wrote when signing the cameras after two of his wins so far at the Indian Wells Masters.
The world No 2 has defeated Matteo Arnaldi, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Fabian Marozsan to reach the quarter-finals in Indian Wells, where he will face Alexander Zverev on Thursday.
The 20-year-old first inscribed the letter ‘N’, before writing ‘Tudum’ after his next match. The Spaniard later shared another hint when he posted a tweet saying: “Tudum! Stay tuned.”
As some had guessed, it is now clear the ‘N’ stood for Netflix and that ‘Tudum’ was in reference to the sound that plays when opening the streaming platform.
“I am very happy for this experience with Morena Films and Netflix,” Alcaraz said in a statement. “People are going to get to watch everything you don’t see on a tennis court. I think it’s something very different. I hope you enjoy this series as much as I will.”
The move sees Netflix continue their investment in producing tennis content, after they exclusively broadcast a live exhibition match in Las Vegas earlier this month.
Alcaraz defeated his legendary Spanish compatriot Rafael Nadal in the first edition of the Netflix Slam on March 3 in the first tennis event shown live on the platform.
Netflix have revealed that filming for this new series, created by Morena Films, started during the Netflix Slam and that it will “will take us inside the professional career” of Alcaraz.
“Alcaraz, the docuseries will follow the tennis prodigy Carlos Alcaraz both on and off the court during his 2024 season. The series will get closer than ever before to one of the best athletes in the world, who is revolutionising the world of tennis,” Netflix explained.
The streaming service also produced the Break Point documentary series, with the two seasons airing in 2023 and 2024 respectively. The series will not return for a third season, however, after it was cancelled due to “poor ratings and concerns over access to the sport’s leading players,” according to journalist Stuart Fraser.
