Judge has just made big move in Alexander Zverev assault trial

Zverev’s lawyers made one request before alleged victim Brenda Patea’s testimony.

The request made by Alexander Zverev’s lawyers to have alleged victim Brenda Patea’s testimony held behind closed doors has been granted.

On Friday, Zverev’s assault appeal hearing started in Berlin after the German tennis star contested the ruling made by a Berlin court in October.

For today, Patea – the mother of Zverev’s child who alleged that she was a victim of physical abuse – is set to testimony. Before the testimony started, Zverev’s lawyers didn’t want the media to sit in the courtroom. And on Monday, the judge granted Zverev’s request on the basis that “even though Zverev is a public person, he has a right to privacy.”

Zverev confident he will win the trial

Patea, who started a relationship with Zverev in 2019, alleges that the German tennis star physically abused her during a dispute in 2020 May. After having a penalty order issued against him and given a €450k fine, Zverev maintained his innocence and said he would take his case to a trial.

“At the end of the day, I do believe in the German system. I do believe in the truth as well. I have to be certain that, you know, I do know what I did, I do know what I didn’t do. That’s, at the end of the day, what’s going to come out, and I have to trust in that,” Zverev said before the start of the French Open.

At the start of the tournament, Zverev also claimed there was no way the trial could impact him negatively since in his mind he was certain that he would win his appeal.

“I do believe that I’m not going to lose this procedure. There’s absolutely no chance I am. That’s why I can play calmly,” Zverev said.

And so far, Zverev has made the French Open round-of-16 and today he plays against Holger Rune.
