Holger Rune reveals true feelings about Boris Becker after split, social media drama

Rune abruptly split with Becker as coach in February before they got into a social media spat at Wimbledon.

Holger Rune says everything is perfectly fine between him and Boris Becker despite their sudden split this year and then a recent social media spat.

After winning his opening four matches at 2023 Wimbledon, Rune lost nine of his next 10 matches. Then, he hired Becker in late 2023 and his form instantly started improving and since he was pretty happy with the German tennis legend, they quickly agreed on continuing together in 2024.

But after Rune finished as runner-up in Brisbane and lost in the Australian Open second round to Arthur Cazaux, he split with Severin Luthi – Roger Federer’s ex-coach whom he hired just before the start of 2024 – and then he also moved on from Becker just a couple of days later. At the time, many were left stunned by the 21-year-old Dane’s radical coaching decisions.

While Rune and Becker downplayed that anything bad happened between them, recently they got into a bit of a social media spat after the German inquired on X whether the Dane was working with coach Patrick Mouratoglou at Wimbledon. The 21-year-old responded by pretty much telling Becker he could have simply messaged him if he wanted the answer to that question.

Now asked about it, Rune says he doesn’t think that hiring Becker was a mistake and also added that he doesn’t feel there was anything too controversial in their recent social media conversation.

“No, no, no. It wasn’t a mistake at all (to hire Boris Becker). We agreed to try it out, and it worked super well. I came directly from a bad period, and he definitely helped me get back on track. I was a bit confused about the tweet he made, but there are no hard feelings. He was a fantastic player, one of the greatest legends in tennis. I definitely learned something from him,” Rune said, via SpilXperten.

After losing to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon round-of-16, world No. 17 Rune is resuming action this week at an ATP 500 tournament in Hamburg, where he is accompanied by coach Kenneth Carlsen and his mother Aneke, who works as his manager.

“It’s nice to have my mom with me. It’s always good to have family support, and my mom has followed me throughout my entire career, and she knows me really well. It’s always good, so it’s nice to have her with me. Kenneth (Carlsen) is here too, so I feel really good,” Rune said.

What happened recently between Rune and Becker on social media?

For the past two years, Rune and Serena Williams’ ex-coach Mouratoglou have frequently worked together. After Simona Halep’s doping ban. Mouratoglou accepted to work with Rune for the remainder of late 2022. And after Halep wasn’t allowed to return to tennis, Rune and Mouratoglou’s partnership became full-time before it ended in 2023 September. Rune and Mouratoglou may not be working full-time coach anymore but the French Open still occasionally joins the Dane’s team – like it was the case at this year’s French Open and Wimbledon.

“Quick question: I see @pmouratoglou in London but NOT with @holgerrune2003 at @Wimbledon …they are still working together?!?” Becker wrote on X just a day before the start of Wimbledon.

Responding to Becker’s inquiry at the time, Rune wrote: “Super strange you don’t ask me this question directly as we text together about other stuff. The answer to your question is yes we work together. Sharing the tournaments between us as planned.”

What Rune said about the Becker split when it happened?

After abruptly deciding to end things with Becker and Luthi, Rune explained that scheduling issues led to the splits.

“As you know, I have tried different coaching variations during the last 12 months. After working with the same coach for 15 years, my entire tennis life, it is not easy to find the perfect match on the first try. I have learned a lot and found out what is important for me to feel good and at the same time develop as I want,” Rune said at the time.

“I have big ambitions and big goals, and I need people around me who have the same vision. And people I can trust to achieve my goals. I need people who know me – who can be there all the time. It gives me security and joy in a world with changing environments and conditions every week.”
