Gauff and Wozniacki make a winning start at the Paris Olympics.
Coco Gauff made a pretty convincing start to her Olympic debut in Paris, while former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki also made a winning return to the Olympics after creating a comeback win in her opening match.
Gauff, seeded at No. 2, had no problems at all handling the business against Ajla Tomljanovic as the American tennis star dismantled the two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist 6-3 6-0 in the Paris Olympics first round.
Meanwhile, 2018 Australian Open champion Wozniacki – who is playing in her first Olympics since 2016 and unretiring – was inches away from losing to Egypt’s Mayar Sherif as the Egyptian had a chance to serve out for the match before the Dane stormed back to win 2-6 7-5 6-1.
In her next match, 2023 US Open champion Gauff will play against Argentina’s Maria Lourdes Carle, while Wozniacki is set to meet No. 8 seed Danielle Collins in a blockbuster second-round clash.
How Gauff dismantled Tomljanovic and how Wozniacki came back to beat Sherif?
Early in the first set, Gauff was twice up by a break but Tomljanovic twice managed to get the break back. But after Gauff earned her third break of the opener in the eighth game to go 5-3 up, the American made no mistake on her serve in the ninth game and routinely served out for the opener.
After winning the last two games of the first set, Gauff was perfect in the second set as she didn’t face a single break point and broke Tomljanovic three times – all while not allowing the Australian a single game point during the set.
Meanwhile in the Wozniacki and Sherif match, the two players traded two early breaks and were tied to two games apiece before the Egyptian went on to win the next four games and go up by a set.
Down by a set, Wozniacki started the second set with a 3-0 lead but then dropped her serve in the fifth and ninth games as Sherif went 5-4 up and had a chance to serve out for the match. Facing an exit, Wozniacki impressively broke Sherif in the 10th game and 12th games to overturn the deficit and force a decider.
