It has been fifty years since the first iteration of the Vienna Open, and the prize money for this year has been unveiled.
The 2024 Vienna Open will take place from October 21st to 27th. It is one of the season’s final two ATP 500 tournaments, with the other being the Stockholm Open, held during the same week.
Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Andre Agassi, Goran Ivanisevic, and Juan Martin Del Potro are among the former winners of the Vienna Open. That is an impressive selection of former champions, and there are many others.
Jannik Sinner won the 2023 Vienna Open. He overcame Daniil Medvedev, who sparked a debate about increased punishments for dangerous racket throws, in a thrilling three-set final. However, Sinner will not defend his title after the world No. 1 made a surprising scheduling decision.
Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, and Grigor Dimitrov are among the players on the entry list for the 2024 Vienna Open. Sinner’s absence should not prevent the tournament from being exciting once again.
This year’s Vienna Open is also notable for being Dominic Thiem‘s final professional tournament. Thiem, the 2020 US Open champion, announced he would retire in front of his home fans in Vienna.
The players on the entry list will be excited by the prize money pot for the ATP 500 tournament. €2,470,310 is planned to be distributed among all the players at the event.
€461,920 of the total prize money pot will be given to the champion of the 2024 Vienna Open, as well as 500 ranking points. Those points could be pivotal for the winner, especially if they are still trying to qualify for the ATP Finals.
The 2024 Vienna runner-up will receive €248,540 and 330 points for being the second-best player of the week. Those are lucrative rewards, but Medvedev, in particular, will be desperate to go a step further and win the tournament after being the runner-up last year.
Making the semifinals in Vienna could still make a big difference to a player trying to qualify for the ATP Finals or finish inside the Top 20 or Top 50. The losing semifinalists will be rewarded with 200 points and €132,470.
100 points and €67,680 are on offer for the players who lose in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Vienna Open. Zverev, Frances Tiafoe, Karen Khachanov, and Borna Gojo fell at that stage in Austria last year.
Players who only manage one victory at the Vienna Open will still get a solid reward for their efforts. 50 points and €36,130 will be given to the 16 players who made it to the second round.
ATP 500 tournaments do not award ranking points to the players who lose in the first round of the main draw. However, they will have €19,270 added to their bank accounts anyway.
The European indoor hardcourt season is often an underrated part of the calendar, and the superb entry list for the Vienna Open should lead to more great tennis being played under the roof in Austria.
