PDC’s commentator Dan Dawson felt that neither Luke Littler nor Luke Humphries were pleased with how they performed during their Swiss Darts Trophy last 16 clash on Sunday.
Humphries ultimately came out on top to book his spot in the quarter-finals, securing a 6-3 victory in Basel. However, Cool Hand will know that he will need to improve markedly if he is to win the competition.
Speaking after Humphries hit double 20 to secure the victory, the PDC TV commentator Dawson said: “To beat Littler, on the Euro Tour again. It’s Humphries that wins the battle of the Lukes.
“Neither man happy with how they’ve played. It’s their C, D, maybe their E game and yet it’s still mid-90s averages. The world No. 1 goes on into the final session of action in the first-ever Swiss Darts Trophy.”
Humphries broke Littler’s throw to claim the opening set before holding his own to claim a two-leg advantage in the opening stages.
The Nuke quickly hit back though to storm into a 3-2 lead, hitting an 80 checkout to hold his throw before impressively landing back-to-back legs to turn the game on its head in the race to six legs.
But Littler, again, saw his throw broken by Humphries which appeared to infuriate the teenager. The two then played out a sensational seventh leg where both missed darts at doubles before Humphries ultimately held his throw.
The disappointment of failing to level the score took its toll on Littler as Humphries broke his throw again efore holding his own and securing the victory.
Humphries had talked up his clash with Littler on Saturday evening, though neither player is likely to feel that the clash was one that will be go down in history.
Cool Hands said: “I think me against Luke is the big game in darts at the moment,” Humphries previews with excitement. “We both enjoy playing each other, so hopefully we can produce a classic and give the fans a great game.”
Humphries will now face Josh Rock in the quarters after his 6-4 win over Rob Cross.
Elsewhere, Martin Schindler moved into the quarter-finals with a 6-4 victory over Stephen Bunting. The German will face either Ross Smith or Raymond van Barneveld in the next round of the competition.
