Alexander Zverev is through into the Wimbledon third round for the sixth time
World no. 4 Alexander Zverev joined the seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon third round. Zverev scored two wins at the All England Club for the sixth time, eight years after doing that for the first time as a 19-year-old.
Zverev faced Marcos Giron in the second round under a roof on Court No. 1 and clinched a 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 triumph in an hour and 34 minutes. The German played well en route to his 96th Major victory, outplaying the American on serve and return.
Alexander barely lost a point behind the initial shot in the opening two sets, clinching them in 53 minutes and emerging at the top with a late break in set number three. World no. 4 fired 12 aces and dropped 12 points behind the initial shot.
Zverev faced no break points, mounting the pressure on the other side.
Giron lost almost half of the points in his games, struggling in the opening two sets and allowing Zverev to notch six breaks from eight opportunities.
Alexander landed 34 winners and 26 unforced errors, taming his strokes nicely and playing well at the net. The better-ranked player made a better start, forcing the rival’s mistake in the first game of the encounter and securing a break at love.
Zverev cemented the break with another forced error in the second game and moved 3-1 in front with an ace in game four. Marcos served well in games three and five, remaining within one break deficit but falling 4-2 behind after Alexander’s service winner in game six.

The German made another push on the return in the next one, drawing the American’s mistake with a powerful backhand and opening a 5-2 advantage.
Zverev served for the opener in game eight and wrapped it up with a hold at love after an ace, closing the first part of the duel in 26 minutes! Alexander served well in the second set and took full control on the return, delivering three straight breaks for a massive advantage.
Zverev moved in front with a break in game three before adding another two games later after Giron’s backhand error for 4-1. Marcos served to stay in the set at 1-5 and experienced another setback behind the initial shot, hitting a double fault and propelling Alexander two sets to love in front in no time.
Giron did not look well during the break ahead of the third set. However, he raised the level on serve and followed Zverev’s pace. The American landed a service winner in the eighth game, locking the result at 4-4 and hoping to reach a tie break.
However, he faced issues while serving to stay in the match at 4-5, feeling the pressure and cracking under it. Giron netted a routine forehand and faced two match points. Alexander converted the first with a deep return, sealing the deal and racing into the third round.
