If he will be able to play Wimbledon, Andy Murray will achieve an incredible new milestone for UK, his country. The 37-year-old Scot was drawn against Tomas Machac in the first round of the Championships. Should Murray decide to participate in the 16th main draw in London, he would set a record for his country, thus becoming the British player with the most caps at Wimbledon, surpassing Jeremy Bates (15). A reason for great pride for the 3-time Slam champion, who could thus put an end to his glorious career.
A week ago it would have been unthinkable to see Murray participate in Wimbledon, in what should really be his last participation in the London Major. The former ATP number 1 retired during the match with Jordan Thompson at the Queen’s Club Championships tournament and was then forced to undergo surgery for a cyst in his back.
The ATP, perhaps too hastily. had announced the withdrawal of the 2-time Wimbledon champion from the 2024 Championships: “After an operation on a spinal cyst, Andy Murray is sadly out of Wimbledon.”
News later denied by the entourage of the former world number one.
“I feel like I deserve the opportunity to go until the last moment to make the decision. It’s complicated, and it’s even more complicated because I want to play Wimbledon one last time. For what I’ve invested in the sport over the last few years, I’d like to at least go out playing a real game, where I’m at least competitive, not like what happened at Queen’s,” told Murray.
