Andy Murray Reacts After Plans for a Tennis Centre Led by His Family Are Scrapped. The €20 million project, spearheaded by Judy Murray, aimed to build a community sports facility at Park of Keir to commemorate the Murray family’s tennis legacy.
The tennis centre was set to be constructed near Dunblane, Andy’s hometown, and even the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) had pledged £5 million for the project. However, it faced opposition from activists who argued it shouldn’t be built on green belt land.
The Murray Play Foundation, Judy Murray’s charity, announced “with deep regret and sorrow” that the project would not move forward due to high construction and energy costs, the lengthy planning process, and discussions with governing bodies.
A foundation spokesperson said: “The Murray family is proud of what they have contributed to tennis in the UK and remain committed to growing the game.”
“Over 12 years, Judy has invested significant time and encountered indifference and opposition for much of that period. However, she and her team persevered until several factors conspired to leave the project unviable in its current form,” the spokeperson added. “We no longer plan to seek a detailed planning consent on the site at Park of Keir.”
After the news was reported on the BBC website, 3-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray reacted on social media with a brief message: “What a surprise,” he wrote, accompanying his blunt remark with an ‘eye-roll’ emoji.
