Andy Murray risks backlash from Taylor Swift fans after cheeky Super Bowl comment

Andy Murray was in a mischievous mood as Taylor Swift watched boyfriend Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LVIII.

Andy Reid’s side became the NFL’s first back-to-back champions since 2003/2004 after Patrick Mahomes threw a walk-off touchdown to Mecole Hardman in overtime to secure a 25-22 victory.

Millions at home watched on as Kelce and his teammates celebrated a last-gasp win inside the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, including two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray.

In fact, Murray decided to bring up Kelce’s girlfriend and American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, who watched on from the stands alongside Ice Spice and Blake Lively.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, in the early hours of Monday morning, the Scot wrote: “Congrats to @taylorswift13 on winning Super Bowl 58, a stunning performance.”

Murray’s post certainly received a mixed reaction from fans. Some found the joke hilarious, while others called out the former world number one for bringing up Swift.

One said: “The people getting mad don’t understand this is a joke,” while a second wrote: “Andy don’t be ridiculous. Taylor was his support person just as your girlfriend turned wife was when you were playing tennis.”

A third commented: “Murray tweeting at Taylor Swift about the Super Bowl was definitely not on my 2024 bingo card.”

A fourth said: “Calm down Andy she did nothing wrong but support her boyfriend we have had to see your mum for all these years,” and a fifth added: “I love Andy Murray.”

After the game, Travis Kelce squashed talk of retirement in his post-match interview.

“The goal’s always been to get three,” he said. “But we couldn’t get here without getting to two. And having that target on our back all year.

“And I love these guys right here. I can’t be more proud of you guys. And how ’bout it? We get a chance to do it three times in a row.”

Kelce also paid tribute to Chiefs coach Andy Reid, saying: “He’s unbelievable. And not only dialling up plays and having everybody prepared. He’s one of the best leaders of men that I’ve ever seen in my life.

“He’s helped me a lot with that… with channelling that emotion, with channelling that passion. I owe my entire career to that guy — and being able to control how emotional I get.”
