Murray retired this week in Queen’s due to a back injury.
Former world No. 1 Andy Murray has just announced that he will be undergoing back surgery tomorrow but he is still not ruled out of Wimbledon though his chances of competing at The Championships are jeopardized.
Murray, a record five-time Queen’s champion, returned to the Queen’s Club this week for what was believed to be his farewell at the tournament. After beating Alexei Popyrin in the Queen’s first round, Murray was 1-4 down to Jordan Thompson in his following match before retiring after evidently struggling with his movement.
After the match, the 37-year-old Briton shared that he felt a weakness in his right leg and that he was also experiencing coordination issues.
Now, the two-time Wimbledon champion is set to have a back surgery on Saturday just a week before the start of The Championships.
“Andy is having a procedure on his back tomorrow. We will know more after this has taken place and will update further as soon as possible,” Murray’s management said in a statement.

After his Queen’s campaign ended in a very unfortunate way, Murray revealed the right side of his back was causing him issues and hinted he may do something to try to fix the issue before Wimbledon.
“I didn’t… Get my right side of my back sort of treated after the French Open, because… Like all tennis players, we have degenerative sort of joints and stuff in the back, but it’s all predominantly been left-sided for me for pretty much my whole career. I have never had too many issues with the right side.
“So maybe there is something that can be done between now and then to help the right side. I will get scans tomorrow (Thursday) and get it rechecked and see if there’s anything that can be done.”
While Murray hasn’t made any official announcements, the last few years have been extremely tough and the general belief is that he is preparing for his final Wimbledon this year.
But now, Murray’s Wimbledon participation is in jeopardy and it remains to be seen how the surgery goes and what happens in the next week.
