Spain’s young tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has reportedly withdrawn from the Davis Cup and has decided to take a break from tennis. The 21-year-old is already regarded as one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category, along with Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
Alcaraz has recently been seen representing his country in the Davis Cup. He played a crucial role in helping Spain overcome France and book their place in the last eight; however, as per the latest report from Daily Express, which quoted Spanish media outlet Marca, the current world number three has decided to withdraw from the competition and take a break from professional tennis.
It is not confirmed whether the Spaniard will return for the remaining matches for Spain in the Davis Cup. After winning his most recent fixture against Ugo Humbert, the youngster admitted having difficulty dealing with the expectations.
“There are times when I smile because I force myself to smile even if I don’t feel like it, he said. “Sometimes it works and changes the dynamic, and other times it doesn’t. At the US Open I forced myself to smile, but it didn’t click. This week has helped me both mentally and tennis-wise, I’ve realized many things.”
Alcaraz has had a fabulous time on the court this season. The former world number one has won two out of four Grand Slams. He first lifted the French Open after beating current world number two Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the final in a five-set thriller with a score of 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1, 6–2. Alcaraz then lifted the Wimbledon title after beating Djokovic in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6. That’s not it, as the current world number three also won a silver medal at the Paris Olympics. He lost in the final of the singles category event to Djokovic in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 7-6.
