Rune, 21, won’t be making his Olympic debut in Paris.
Holger Rune has confirmed what many feared could happen as the 21-year-old Dane is forced to withdraw from the Paris Olympics due to his wrist injury.
After Wimbledon, Rune went to an ATP 500 tournament in Hamburg to use it as a preparation for the upcoming Olympics. But at the start of his Hamburg campaign, the 16th-ranked Dane injured his knee during his first-round match against Fabian Marozsan.
While Rune managed to get through that match and later also beat Marco Trungelliti, he continued to be hampered by his knee and that led to him retiring mid-match versus Arthur Fils in the quarterfinal last Friday.
After Hamburg, Rune still went to Umag – a tournament he was hoping to use as his last preparation for the Olympics. But on Monday, the former world No. 4 pulled out of the tournament and it didn’t happen because of a knee issue but because of a wrist injury.
However, that still raised major concerns about the Dane’s Olympic participation. And now, Rune also won’t be able to make his Olympic debut.
Rune’s announcement
“I am really sorry that I will be unable to play the Olympics. It’s something I’ve been looking forward to playing and being a part of. I have played with pain in my wrist throughout both the clay and grass season, so I have to take the medical recommendations seriously. I will follow the Olympics from home and cheer on all the Danish athletes and I hope and believe that we can bring home many medals from Paris,” Rune wrote on X.
