PDC Takes a Stand Against Disruptive Fan Behavior Following Littler’s Criticism
The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) has issued a firm statement condemning disruptive behavior from fans after recent incidents at the Premier League Darts event in Glasgow. This comes in the wake of criticism from rising star Luke Littler, who expressed his frustration with sections of the crowd during his victory over Luke Humphries.
Littler’s victory, a thrilling contest that went down to the wire, was unfortunately marred by persistent whistling and jeering, particularly aimed at Humphries as he was throwing. Littler, while pleased with his win, couldn’t hide his disappointment with the crowd’s conduct. “Yeah, obviously, there was a few in particular that were doing it [whistling] when Luke [Humphries] was throwing,” Littler commented after the match. “Kirk [Bevins, match referee] told them to be quiet and it got even worse, and then I missed doubles and Luke breaks at 5-4.”
The young star further elaborated on the impact of the disruptions, saying, “I’m just like, ‘Kirk, you’ve made it worse for me there, I’m 5-4 down.’ But I broke back and held my throw very strongly again.”1 Littler acknowledged the need for intervention but also expressed a desire for it to be handled effectively. “If it’s the same (outcome) as what it was when Kirk said it, then obviously just leave it. Obviously, they’ve got to step in at some point and say something. But yeah, that was pretty bad, but I got the win.”2
Littler’s sentiments were echoed by many within the darts community, with concerns raised about the impact of such behavior on players’ performance and the overall atmosphere of the event. The PDC, in its statement, made it clear that it does not condone any behavior that disrupts the flow of play or creates an uncomfortable environment for the players.
“Following Thursday’s Premier League Darts night in Glasgow, the PDC wishes to strongly reiterate that it does not condone any behaviour which can disrupt an event, such as whistling or booing when players are throwing,”3 the statement read. “Every player goes on stage with the intention of performing to the best of their ability and providing an entertaining spectacle for all fans, whether in the venue or watching worldwide.”4
The PDC emphasized that such actions are not in line with the spirit of the sport and detract from the enjoyment of the event for both players and spectators. “As per the terms and conditions of entry to events, spectators who act inappropriately can be removed from the venue,” the5 statement continued. “The PDC works closely with Premier League venues, who have responsibility for crowd control, to take proactive and decisive action against those who behave inappropriately.”
The6 organization also acknowledged the vast majority of fans who consistently show their support in a positive manner. “The vast majority of fans who attend our sell-out events on a regular basis also condemn this behaviour and we will continue to promote a positive atmosphere which gives all players the opportunity to play to the best of their ability in every match.”7
The incidents in Glasgow serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a respectful and sporting environment at darts events. While passionate support is always welcome, crossing the line into disruptive behavior can negatively impact the players and the overall experience for everyone involved. The PDC’s strong stance sends a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated, and efforts will be made to ensure that future events are free from such disturbances.
