Spain’s young tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has revealed that he has taken time out to ‘disconnect’ after a disappointing outing at the US Open. The 21-year-old is already regarded as one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category along with Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
Alcaraz’s most recent appearance came at the US Open, where he suffered a shocking defeat in the second round to Netherlands’ Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 7-5, 6-4. After that result, the Spaniard admitted that he was no way near good enough on the night against his opponent.
Alcaraz was recently quoted in a report where he expressed his wish of going far in the US Open. The reigning world number three also revealed that he has taken time out to ‘disconnect’ from tennis after a hectic few months and is now looking to return to the court in the Davis Cup where he will be representing his country Spain.
“I was with friends, I was able to go to Formula 1… These are things I wanted to do, but the calendar didn’t allow it,” he said. “I wish I had been in New York, of course, but you have to find time to disconnect a little bit. I had two or three days that were good for me to calm down, but once I was calm, I thought the best thing to do was to get back to training, to give our best, to get physically very good to be confident on the [right] track.”
Despite the setback in New York, Alcaraz is having an impressive season where he lifted two out of the four Grand Slams. He won the French Open after beating Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the final in straight sets with a score of 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1, 6–2. Alcaraz then went on to win Wimbledon title after beating Djokovic in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.
