Carlos Alcaraz rose from the ashes. In the third round of Wimbledon, the Spaniard, reigning champion, was very close to a resounding elimination. A very good Frances Tiafoe, in fact, found himself ahead of a set (2-1) and ahead 0-30 on the score of 4-4 in the fourth set. At that point, however, the 3-time Grand Slam champion fielded all his qualities, managing to take home the set at the tiebreak and, thanks to the poor physical lucidity of the opponent, to close the decisive part with a net 6-2.
For the young Iberian champion this is the twelfth game in the slam in which he is forced to the fifth set. The impressive fact is that on eleven occasions he managed to take home the match. Matteo Berrettini, in the third round of the 2022 Australian Open, was the only one to beat the Spaniard in the decisive set.

During the press conference Carlos Alcaraz commented on his statistics: “What makes me special in these situations? That I feel very good physically (laughs). I don’t know. In the fifth set I think I raised my tennis, my level. The fact that I feel so good physically also helps me to play, say, calmer than my opponent.
I feel much better than my opponent physically and mentally: I know that my opponent has to play a very high level of tennis and be at a very high level of intensity if he wants to beat me. This really helps me deal with the difficult situations of the fifth set. I play with the statistic of losing only one game on the fifth set, so this is an advantage for me”.
Alcaraz added: “I realize I’m a great player in the fifth set. I push my rival and push him to the limit, try to make him 100% physically and mentally. Sometimes it’s hard for the opponent to maintain that kind of intensity and that level in the fifth set. In my head I think I’m good, that I have to believe that I will win and that I will show my best tennis. ” I think I’ll win, that’s what makes the difference for me.”
