‘Carlos Alcaraz to be favourite at Wimbledon’, says top analyst

Alcaraz will try to defend his title at the Championships

The clay court season, as we wait to re-embrace the circuit for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, came to a close with Carlos Alcaraz’s triumph at Roland Garros. The Spanish tennis player defeated Alexander Zverev in five sets in the final and won his third career Slam at age 21.

The Tour will now move to grass, where the absolute stars could still be Jannik Sinner and Alcaraz himself. The El Palmar native stunned everyone last year in the last act of Wimbledon by beating Novak Djokovic on his favorite ground: that of the fifth set.

Alcaraz will try to defend his title at the Championships, where Rafael Nadal will not be there and Djokovic should not be. The Serbian champion underwent knee surgery and will most likely be forced to skip the third major of the season.

In an editorial written for the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Paolo Bertolucci complimented the Spaniard by titling: “Roland Garros, the best player won.

And now Carlos Alcaraz is also the favorite at Wimbledon”. “In the end, the strongest player triumphed on the red clay of Roland Garros; Alcaraz deservedly won, after going through a tournament full of difficulties, beating the Greek Tsitsipas, Jannik Sinner in the semifinals, and of course Zverev”, wrote Bertolucci.

“An opponent who, at this point, deservedly returns to the second step of the world rankings, taking home a third Slam on three different surfaces: first the hard court of the US Open, then the grass of Wimbledon and now the clay of France.

We Italians leave the prestigious Parisian tournament proud of what happened and what we experienced in these two weeks. Objectively unexpected results have arrived among both men and women, and even the semifinal with the defeat of Jannik Sinner must be accepted as a positive result given what the Italian had previously been through and considering that the new Italian world number one was the only player who managed to really put the winner of Roland Garros in serious difficulty”.
