The Canadian, overwhelmed by controversy after an initial attack on his Italian colleague, admitted that he wasn’t mad at him
The new words released by Denis Shapovalov after the case involving Jannik Sinner’s positivity to Clostebol, came out after hours of controversy. Many social media users and fans have inundated the Canadian with attacks, after Denis had expressed his harsh opinion regarding the issue.
“Honestly, it had nothing to do with Jannik Sinner. For me, it’s just a question of how they handle each situation differently, depending on the player. It’s not fair that some tennis players have been suspended for years for contamination, and others are able to play and are just trying to sweep it under the carpet. There are a couple of other athletes who have never tested positive and have missed a couple of tests, receiving an 18-month ban,” tried to clarify the Canadian.
Shapovalov had ended up at the center of criticism from fans and colleagues for the post published on X following the ruling that cleared the Italian of doping charges.
“Different rules for different players,” was his harsh comment, which immediately went viral online, unleashing fans on social media. The web was naturally divided and there was no shortage of messages of disapproval, as well as those who shared the point of view.
The 25-year-old born in Tel Aviv clarified what he meant by that message in the interview with Tennis Majors, who reached out to him to clarify his position on the very delicate subject.
Shapovalov is now preparing for his official debut in the last Slam of the 2024 season: at the US Open the Canadian will face the Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in the first round of the competition. If he wins, he could treat himself to a real super challenge with the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, winner of Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year.
