Denis Shapovalov makes one thing clear after ripping Jannik Sinner doping case

Shapovalov clarifies what he meant in the remarks he posted on X after the Sinner doping news.

Denis Shapovalov has made it clear that he wasn’t taking any personal shots at Jannik Sinner but just wanted to point at how certain things are being handled by the tennis authorities.

After the ITIA announced earlier this week that Sinner tested positive twice for a banned steroid in March but avoided a ban after he proved it happened unknowingly and unintentionally, some couldn’t believe that the Italian wasn’t at least suspended during the investigation process.

One of the first to react was Nick Kyrgios, who labeled the decision as “ridiculous” and added that the ATP world No. 1 should have at least been slapped with a two-year suspension.

Shortly after, Shapovalov also joined Kyrgios and some other pro players in giving a take on the matter.

“Can’t imagine what every other player that got banned for contaminated substances is feeling right now,” Shapovalov wrote on X shortly after the Sinner news dropped.

Shapovalov also added more in a separate post: “Different rules for different players.”

Shapovalov clarifies his comments on the Sinner doping news

“Honestly, it has nothing to do with Jannik. To me, it’s just about how they handle every situation differently, depending on what player it is. It’s not right that some players have been suspended for years for contamination, and other players are able to play and they’re just trying to sweep it under the rug. There are a couple of other players who have never tested positive and missed a couple of tests, and are given an 18-month ban,” Shapovalov told Tennis Majors.

The first player that came to the mind of many was Simona Halep. After testing positive for a banned substance in late 2022, Halep was instantly suspended – and although she quickly managed to prove that she was a victim of a contaminated product – she wasn’t allowed to return until the process finally ended in March this year.

But in Sinner’s case, everything resolved pretty quickly and the Italian didn’t have to miss a single day. And that’s why some have been ripping the entire situation as “double standards” and calling out the tennis authorities.
