Emma Raducanu, Britain’s 22-year-old tennis star, has withdrawn from Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup Finals team to compete in the WTA 500 Korea Open from September 15-21, 2025, a decision that has stunned fans and analysts. Announced just days before the team event in Shenzhen, China, where Britain faces Japan in the quarter-finals on September 18, her absence is a major setback for the team aiming to build on their 2024 semi-final performance. Raducanu’s choice prioritizes her individual career, aligning with her new coach Francisco Roig’s strategy to boost her ranking and prepare for the 2026 Australian Open.
Since her 2021 US Open victory, Raducanu’s career has been a mix of highs and lows. Injuries, including a foot sprain from last year’s Korea Open, have disrupted her progress, with her ranking now at No. 36. Opting for the Korea Open, where she earned a wildcard, allows her to defend 2024 quarter-final points and gain momentum. “I’m working towards playing better and being a more complete tennis player,” Raducanu said after her 2025 US Open third-round loss to Elena Rybakina. “I’m looking forward to going back to Asia.”
