Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula are both out of the singles, but they secured the quarter-final of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships in doubles.
The Americans haven’t played a lot together this year because Pegula dealt with an injury that kept her away from the courts for a while. They’ve hinted at essentially ending their partnership in the near future, as Gauff wants to predominantly focus on singles.
Pegula will likely continue playing doubles regularly, and the 20-year-old likely won’t abandon her doubles career completely. Expect her to play doubles here and there, but it won’t be as often as she’s done it so far. In any case, they’ve teamed up together for this year’s Wimbledon, and so far, it’s been going well.
They faced the tricky combo of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini and comfortably beat them. Gauff recently faced this combo in the Roland Garros final, which she won with Katerina Siniakova. It was the first time she had won a Grand Slam in doubles, and she’s trying to do that again this week with Pegula.
The first set was mostly dominated by the American combo who were better but also faced a lot of issues. For example, they faced 9 break points on their serve but got broken only once as opposed to their opponents, who faced 5 break points but got broken three times.
They just outplayed them in the crucial moments as the Italians couldn’t quite find the breakthrough easily. They did find it in the second set, taking a break midway through the second set, but the Americans broke back immediately, so it didn’t matter too much.
After avoiding that disaster, Gauff and Pegula pushed harder and were able to win the match in two sets, booking a spot in the quarter-final of the grass-court major, winning 6-2, 6-4.
