Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has called Spain’s young sensation Carlos Alcaraz a ‘freak’ after his first-round heroics in the Australian Open.
The first Grand Slam of the year is already underway where players from all over the world are participating and showcasing their talent at the highest level.
Alcaraz, who is renowned as one of the most highly-rated players currently playing in the circuit alongside Italy’s Jannik Sinner and America’s Ben Shelton, started brilliantly in Melbourne where he registered a win in the straight set against France’s Richard Gasquet with a score of 7-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Kyrgios, who is currently spending his time off the court as he continues his recovery from an injury, was recently quoted in a report where he called Alcaraz a ‘freak’ after his impressive start in the mega-event.
“He makes me excited about tennis,” said Kyrgios. “Guy’s scary. End range. He’s a freak when he’s on end range like that. Intangibles are top notch. He’s one person I do want to face, I want to play and I want to give a good crack at when I go back. Before it’s all said and done, it’d be fun. Hopefully he’s nice to me. His bad days are still my good days.”
The current world number and two-time Grand Slam winner will now face Italy’ Lorenzo Sonego in the second round of the mega-event on Thursday.
