He shared the locker room with Simona Halep and Sorana Cîrstea and reveals: “There was tension, I later found out”

Invited to the Open GSP, Mihaela Buzărnescu, 36 years old, former number 20 WTA, was asked about the tensions in Romania’s Fed Cup team. “In 2018 it was unpleasant, there was something between Simona Halep and Sorana Cîrstea, later it was OK”, said Miki.

In today’s edition of the Open GSP show, Gazeta Sporturilor’s newest video production, Buzărnescu accepted the challenge to comment on a series of images from her career. Among them, a photo from the Fed Cup, in which he appears alongside Monica Niculescu, Irina Begu, Simona Halep, Florin Segărceanu and Raluca Olaru.

“Here (n.r. – points to the picture) the atmosphere was OK, I think it’s about the game against the Czech Republic. There were also formulas in which I was not OK”, reacted Mihaela Buzărnescu.

Then he elaborated: “Most of the time during the Fed Cup periods it was possible to put aside the individual factor and be as a team. During the matches there were never any problems, but in 2018 it was unpleasant, when they played in Cluj.

It was a difficult atmosphere, it was difficult to communicate. I found out later, there was a situation, there had been something between Simona and Sorana. I had come from a tour, I wasn’t up to date with the news, I just heard some discussions. I did not understand even now what was the exact reason for the dispute. It was like an individual tennis tournament, we greeted each other, everyone had their training schedule, with their team and that was it.

We used to come to meals together, but there was no communication, to ask yourself: “How are you, how are you?”. We are people, we see each other more than we see our own family, it’s normal to see how one, the other is doing, to talk about clothes, about relationships (n.r. – laughs), simple, normal things, to socialize”.

Mihaela Buzărnescu: “United, we had the chance to achieve something bigger”
Miki Buzărnescu added: “After 2018, the atmosphere was OK, he fought until the last moment and I could see that, united, we had the chance to achieve something bigger, to reach the semi-finals and close to the final”.

Were there also friendships between the Romanian women? “Yes, Simona and Irina Begu were close, from what I saw at the Fed Cup. Monica with Simona and Irina were still OK”, replied Buzărnescu.

In 2018, Romania’s Fed Cup team played two duels in Cluj, both won, with Canada and Switzerland, thus ensuring its presence in World Group I. At the end of that year, Sorana Cîrstea chose to permanently withdraw from the Fed team cup
