Nick Kyrgios once stood in the Wimbledon final, and it’s still a match he thinks about often, as he recently revealed.
Kyrgios was always considered a huge talent who simply never really lived up to his potential. It was his own fault because he didn’t take it seriously, and it left many, most notably John McEnroe, very frustrated.
He did take the sport seriously in recent years, investing a lot of time into fitness and practice, and it worked out wonderfully for his tennis. The pinnacle of that was his appearance in the Wimbledon final a few years ago, where he won the opening set against Novak Djokovic.
He wasn’t able to win the match, which he still thinks about because he came so close to winning that one major event he sees as really special. If he could pick one event to win, it’s Wimbledon, and he didn’t get it done.
“I won the first set and I’m two sets away… I feel like I still think about that match every day like what if I had played those two sets better like I won five sets in a row against Novak. I beat him twice before that, didn’t drop a set, won the first which means five sets in a row and then I lose three straight.”
