The WTA No. 1 Iga Swiatek has qualified for the quarterfinals of the US Open, where she will face the American Jessica Pegula, in what is a highly anticipated match. The Polish player defeated the Russian Liudmila Samsonova in the round of 16 with a score of 6-4 6-1. Jessica, instead, beat another Russian, the rising star Diana Shnaider.
The American won the WTA 1000 in Toronto and then reached the final of the Cincinnati Open, arriving in New York with great ambitions and the desire to conquer the first Slam semifinal of her career.
In the post match interview, Swiatek analyzed the challenge that awaits her against Pegula, revealing why it is always difficult to compete against the American.
“You have to work low on your legs and be ready for long rallies but also for big shots. She’s a great player, so it’s definitely going to be a challenge. We played here two years ago. Playing against Jessica is never easy. Quite a complicated style of play,” she said.
The interviewer asked Iga about Jason Sudeikis, considering she’s a big fan of Ted Lasso and Sudeikis was at the US Open yesterday to watch the Pole play.
“I saw him tonight when I was watching the umpire. I wanted to stay focused and I hope he likes my mentality because that’s what Ted Lasso is. I hope he likes it and that he’s not working on a new series or something like that right now. Soccer is a completely different sport because there it’s all about team spirit. Here a little bit with my team, but we’re alone on the court. I try to avoid looking at the screens,” said the Pole.
