Gauff is determined to win her first Olympics medal at Paris, where last month she was able to win French Open in the doubles category.
American WTA star Coco Gauff is all ready to make her debut at the Olympics. The 20-year-old could not play at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to her COVID-19 infection. Nevertheless, the 2023 US Open champion is ready to represent her country at one of the biggest stages and Gauff is obviously excited. However, she does not want to get lost in the excitement.
As Gauff gets ready to bring glory to her country with her teammates- Jessica Pegula, Danielle Collins, and Taylor Fritz- the 20-year-old has revealed her approach for the Games. Gauff has said that playing in the Olympics has been a dream for her and now that the time has come, she is excited but at the same time she does not want to get carried away.
It’s something I’ve been wanting to do since I was a kid, and I have the opportunity to represent my country–it means a lot. I’ve grown up a lot, so now I’m just taking in the moments and being grateful for everyday I get to step on the court, and every day that I get to be alive in general. I could probably go into it making it a big deal – which it is a big deal – but I think I play my best tennis when I try to minimize the moment as much as possible, so I’m just going to enjoy it.Coco Gauff said while talking to WTA
The 20-year-old is focused on learning and making the most of the opportunity instead of just winning. Gauff feels that playing at the Olympics is going to be a positive experience for her anyway, no matter the results.
Coco Gauff to play in all three categories possible at Paris Olympics
While Coco Gauff is looking to minimize the moment at the 2024 Paris Olympics, she is looking to maximize her chances of winning a medal by participating in all three categories possible for her. While Gauff playing in singles is a certainty, she has also confirmed her participation in the doubles event with partner Jessica Pegula.
The American pair has been one of the most successful doubles pairs on the tour and Gauff wants to fight for a medal. Apart from singles and doubles, Gauff might also participate in the mixed doubles event. This will give her another shot at an Olympic gold medal.
Gauff has not been in action since her fourth-round exit from the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. The 20-year-old lost to compatriot Emma Navarro who will also accompany her on the trip to Paris. Nevertheless, despite another underwhelming performance at Wimbledon, Gauff is a gold medal contender at the Olympics.
The American has a decent record on clay, having made it to two quarterfinals, a final, and a semifinal in the last four editions. Gauff was on her way to the final this year as well, but was defeated by eventual champion Iga Swiatek, who will pose a threat yet again. It will be interesting to see if the American avenges her defeat in Paris.
