Canadian tennis star Felix Auger-Aliassime and his girlfriend Nina Ghaibi recently enjoyed their time in Tokyo ahead of the Japan Open. Set to take place at the Ariake Coliseum from 25 September to 1 October, the tournament offers a total prize purse of $1,818,380.
Auger-Aliassime is set to compete in the Japan Open following his first-round exit at the US Open where he was stunned by the Czech Republic’s Jakub Menšík in straight sets.So far, the most notable accomplishments of the former world No. 6 in the 2024 season have been finishing as the runner-up at the Madrid Open, earning Canada’s second-ever Olympic tennis medal with a bronze in mixed doubles, and reaching the semifinal in men’s singles at the Paris Olympics.
Ahead of the Japan Open, Felix Auger-Aliassime and girlfriend Nina Ghaibi had a fun time together where they were seen attending a Sumo wrestling match, the combat sport that is widely practiced and the national sport of the country.The couple also spent time enjoying Japanese delicacies by trying their popular Udon noodles. Notably, Auger-Aliassime and his girlfriend Nina have been in a relationship since March 2019. She is an equestrian and the cousin of Australian tennis player Ajla Tomljanović, renowned for her accomplishments on the ITF Women’s Circuit.
A look into Felix Auger-Aliassime’s performance at the 2023 Japan Open
At the 2023 Japan Open, Felix Auger-Aliassime registered two consecutive victories for the first time in seven months. He powered his way to the quarterfinal by defeating Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic and Sebastian Ofner of Austria in the Round of 32 and Round of 16 respectively. Post his successive wins, he said, via ATP- Tennis Majors:
“I needed results like this. It’s been er… I mean, I’m kind of tired of talking about the year it’s been.”
He added:
“I believe in my game and I believe in myself that I have what it takes to win at this level. I have done it before, so it is about doing it and having a lot of belief and a positive mind. I am happy that my level is translating to the match court after a couple of months.”
Unfortunately, he couldn’t go past the quarterfinal stage after losing to the USA’s Marcos Giron with a scoreline of 1-6, 4-6.
