Famous tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou is of the opinion that world number one Carlos Alcaraz’s recent struggle during the US Open was because he was ‘emotionally drained’. The 21-year-old is already regarded as one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category along with Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
Alcaraz’s most recent appearance was during the US Open, where he suffered a shocking defeat in the second round to the Netherlands’ Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 7-5, 6-4. After the match, the young Spaniard admitted that his levels during the match were not good enough.
Tennis coach Mouratoglou was recently quoted in a report where he stated that he was not surprised by seeing the four-time Grand Slam winner struggle in New York. The 54-year-old was of the opinion that Alcaraz’s performance dropped in the US Open because he was ‘emotionally’ drained.
“I wouldn’t think he would lose in three sets like this but for me, it’s half a surprise,” he said. “Two Grand Slams in a row, now he can rest. No. The Olympic Games now. Plus all the other tournaments. He was exhausted, mentally exhausted. I am not surprised that he is saying that he had so many thoughts and so many emotions that he couldn’t deal with. That is exactly the consequence of someone who is emotionally drained. If you are not fresh here [in the mind], it is more and more difficult to do it.”
Despite that result, Alcaraz will be very proud of his performance this season. He has won two out of the four Grand Slams and also managed to grab a silver medal for his country at the Paris Olympics. Alcaraz won the French Open after beating Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the final in a five-set thriller with a score of 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1, 6–2. He then went on to win the Wimbledon title as well after beating Djokovic in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.
