Jack Grealish and Jeremy Doku both have crucial roles to play in City’s treble defence

As Manchester City’s treble defence continues it is clear that Jack Grealish and Jeremy Doku will both be required by Pep Guardiola. The two players are vastly different types of wingers but both will have a crucial role as City chase history.

Jeremy Doku was Pep Guardiola’s preferred option on the left wing during City’s 2-nil win over Everton last Saturday. Doku was arguably City’s most dangerous attacking threat until the second-half introduction of Kevin De Bruyne. Doku does have to improve his end product and decision-making. But his pace and ability will be important, especially against sides that defend deep like Everton.

Pep Guardiola explained before City clashed with Everton what Grealish had to do to regain his place in City’s starting lineup. To his credit in his brief cameo at the Etihad, it did appear that Grealish had taken his manager’s advice. There was more intent to the England internationals game than in previous appearances. It was a positive sign from Grealish with a critical month ahead for City.

Last season saw Jack Grealish become an integral player in City’s treble success. His ability to maintain possession became a critical element in his team’s success last campaign. At his best, he is an important player for Pep Guardiola. His performance in City’s win over Manchester United earlier this season is a prime example of what Grealish can add when he’s at his best.

With their vastly different set of attributes, Jack Grealish and Jeremy Doku will both have a role to play for the remainder of the season. It could also become a case in which one seizes their opportunity to make the left wing spot their own. But as it stands the pair will both be required by their manager.
