Sinner recalled his second-round win over Berrettini after ousting Ben Shelton to make the Wimbledon quarterfinal.
Jannik Sinner took a moment to show major respect and appreciation for Matteo Berrettini after reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinal as the current world No. 1 said that it “was not a second-round match” but that it also helped him be at his best right from the start of the tournament.
When the Wimbledon draw was released, one of the things that stuck out was the possibility of having No. 1 seed Sinner take on 2022 Wimbledon runner-up Berrettini in the second round. And after they won their respective openers, that match indeed happened.
Although Berrettini is currently ranked at No. 59 and he was unseeded, the former world No. 6 came to play against Sinner and it was a real battle. But ultimately, Sinner found a way to win in four tight sets 7-6 (3) 7-6 (4) 2-6 7-6 (4).
Since then, Sinner has clinched back-to-back straight set wins over Miomir Kecmanovic and Ben Shelton to set up a Wimbledon quarterfinal against Daniil Medvedev.
Sinner shows respect for Berrettini at Wimbledon
“It’s an early wake-up call. Straight away, I knew I had to play my best tennis. I felt like the level we both played was extremely high. This was worth more than a second-round match for sure. It was unlucky for both of us to face each other in the seciond round. These things can happen,” Sinner explained.
“I was just happy to go on court. It was a great test to see where my level is. I’m also happy for him. The way he’s played. Great attitude on court. He’s back healthy. I just see very positive things for him. It’s tough to play against a friend, so you have to take this part away, and try to focus on yourself, which I’ve done.”
