The new number 1 of the ATP ranking Jannik Sinner has played 40 matches this year where he achieved 37 victories and 3 defeats, all of which however arrived in the final phase of a tournament. One specific data highlights the enormous steps forward made by the Italian tennis player this season. Sinner got 37 victories and only 3 defeats, matching the record set by Bjorn Borg way back in 1978.
Few have done better: only six tennis players throughout history. And the the Serbian champion Novak Djokovic leads this ranking. The 24-times-Slam champion even in 2011 managed to win all the first 40 matches played in that calendar year, a record never achieved by anyone in the history of the sport. Immediately behind were the Americans Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe while Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer did slightly better, with 38 wins and 2 losses. The Swiss achieved this record in 2005 while Rafa achieved this data in 2013.
