Novak Djokovic is thrilled to be back in Perth as the Serbian tennis star told local media after landing that he is hoping this is “not the last time” he is competing in Australia.
On Wednesday, Djokovic played an exhibition match against Carlos Alcaraz in Riyadh. Shortly after concluding his Riyadh match, Djokovic hopped on a plane for Perth, where he is set to start his season by representing Serbia at the United Cup.
For Djokovic, this will be his first time playing in Perth since 2013. 10 years ago, Djokovic and Ana Ivanovic represented Serbia at the Hopman Cup.
“It’s been a while since I played here. I remember every time I played in Perth was great. People here in Australia love tennis, sports in general, so I expect nothing less now. I’m sure everyone will enjoy it,” Djokovic told local media after arriving in Perth.
Djokovic ‘honored’ to represent his nation
Djokovic, who was a part of Serbia’s team that made the Davis Cup semifinal in 2023, hopes to lead Serbia to their first United Cup title.
“It’s always an honor to represent Serbia. I hope that the stands will be full and that many people will come to watch our matches. It will be a good introduction to Melbourne,” Djokovic said.
Also, 36-year-old Djokovic hopes to make at least a couple of more appearances in Australia before retiring.
“I hope this is not the last time I play in Australia. I always look forward to coming here. I feel that years ago I played my best tennis here and I had strong support,” Djokovic said.
Throughout his career, Djokovic has had massive success in Australia. Most notably, Djokovic is a record 10-time Australian Open champion. Ideally, Djokovic would certainly like to win the United Cup and have the best possible preparation for his Australian Open title defense.
