It appears to be a case of when, not if, Manchester City get their hands on Matheus Nunes after one of his Wolves team-mates published a farewell message.
Pep Guardiola is a massive fan of the Portuguese midfielder, describing him earlier this year as “one of the best players in the world today”. Wolves boss Gary O’Neil confirmed on Friday that the club have rejected a bid for the former Sporting Lisbon middleman. That is believed to have been from City and worth around £47m.
“He’s an important player for us and has four, potentially five, years left on his contract,” said O’Neil, who replaced Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the season.
“He’s suspended for the weekend [for the game against Everton, which Wolves won], unfortunately, but we rejected a bid because we didn’t feel it met our valuation and we move on.”
However, the Premier League champions remain keen on Nunes and are widely expected to wrap up the transfer ahead of Friday’s deadline. According to Sport Italia journalist Rudy Galetti, City are unfazed about their first bid being rejected and are ready to make a new offer worth around £60m, much closer to Wolves’ valuation.
The news seems to have made it to the Wolves players judging by a social media post from Matheus Cunha, who posted a tribute to his “brother” on Instagram.
