Matteo Berrettini has stated two huge aims as the 2024 season continues and one of them is buoyed by the success of his compatriot, Jannik Sinner.
Sinner sealed the Australian Open in January defeating Daniil Medvedev from two sets down in the final. But he also heralded glory to Italy in the Davis Cup Finals as Berrettini had to be a mere spectator to Sinner and co defeating Novak Djokovic’s Serbia in particular to claim the title.
Berrettini who has dealt with horrific injury luck over the last year isn’t 100% back he admits, but he said that his main aim this season is simply to discern the setbacks that have happened both in his head and in his body that have hampered him and inspiration does come from the success of his compatriot to do so. But whether he can given his rotten luck in returning to the sport remains to be seen.
“I’m better, but I’m not yet 100%. The goal is to play the whole season, and without these setbacks which are destroying my body and my head,” said Berrettini to Sky Sports.
“Sinner did a miracle. I will also use this energy for my tennis. I was happy with what Jannik said. We have a good relationship, which has strengthened in recent months. We are different but similar. We are pursuing the same dream.”
