The Italian revealed what was the black moment of his professional life
Matteo Berrettini tells the details of his dramatic darkest time
Getting back on track with your life, after difficult and discouraged moments, is never easy. It applies to all people, in everyday life. This also applies to those who are in the spotlight because of their profession. One of them is Matteo Berrettini.
His career seemed to be on the rise until Wimbledon 2021. Then an endless series of physical problems slowed him down. Added to this were the ferocious (and unfair) criticisms for the love story (now over) with the showgirl Melissa Satta. The more malicious ones pointed out how Berrettini returned to win a title (The Grand Prix Hassan II, in Marrakech – ed.) just after the end of his love story.
Berrettini is finally back on the court, after a negative period that seemed to have no end. The Italian champion spoke about the last black months before his rebirth in the new original Red Bull Zeta series.
Berrettini explained how his worst moment occurred following the injury suffered at the 2023 US Open.
“It was the most difficult moment, during which I felt that the tank had been completely emptied and that I really struggled to get out of bed in the morning. At a certain point I said: now I only do the things I feel like doing. I had to take care of myself,” he told.
Berrettini then indicated his favorite opponents: “I have always been particularly impressed when I played with Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
Every time I challenged them, they studied me, adapted to my game and took countermeasures. Having the opportunity to train with them, but also with the Italian boys is very important, we motivate and improve each other.”
The victory in Morocco gave Matteo a new awareness, which he will carry with him in the coming weeks.
“All this work I have done on myself gives me the strength to say that there will certainly be difficult moments, sad moments.
However, the important thing was to start again with better energy than in the past and to rediscover joy and excitement for an event that is coming and not the terror of saying: now something will happen,” he told.
Berrettini eliminated in Monte Carlo
We remember Berrettini was eliminated in the first round in Monte-Carlo. Miomir Kecmanovic beat him 6-3 6-1. For the Italian tennis player it is a defeat with a not too bitter taste given the splendid goal achieved a few days ago in Marrakech.
A title that had been missing for almost two years and which he sought with all his might, after having spent a very difficult period away from the playing courts. His season has just begun.
Berrettini will prepare in the best possible way for two very significant events for him, Rome and Roland Garros, before diving into his beloved grass-swing.
