Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II, has entered a guilty plea for his third DWI offense, opting to avoid trial.
Patrick Mahomes Sr. avoids trail for DUI charge
The 54-year-old former Major League Baseball reliever appeared in Smith County Court in Texas on Tuesday, where he agreed to a five-year probation sentence.
The first year of his probation will include “intense” supervision.
Initially set to go to trial, Mahomes Sr. chose to plead guilty, potentially avoiding a much harsher penalty.
Under Texas law, a third DWI offense is classified as a third-degree felony, carrying a possible prison sentence of two to ten years and a fine of up to $10,000.
If he fails to comply with the terms of his probation, Mahomes Sr. could face up to ten years in prison.
Judge Kerry L. Russell ordered a pre-sentence report, with a formal sentencing scheduled for September 23.
Despite the seriousness of the charge, Mahomes Sr. left the courtroom quietly, accompanied by his attorney, who declined to comment.
When did Patrick Mahomes Sr. get arrested?
The charges stem from an incident on February 3, when Mahomes Sr. was arrested during a routine traffic stop.
The arrest affidavit revealed that officers discovered an open container of alcohol and an expired vehicle registration.
Mahomes Sr. admitted to having “a few beers” at a nearby bar while watching a game.
Further complicating his legal issues, Mahomes Sr. was found driving with an invalid license on June 29.
He has pleaded not guilty to that charge and is set to face a pre-trial hearing on October 15.
In recent months, Mahomes Sr. has publicly acknowledged his efforts to stay sober.
Earlier this month, he took to Instagram to share his progress, writing, “I would like to thank my God, wife, family, and friends for 6 months on the sunny side of the road. I know it’s been hard getting to know sober Pat but it’s well worth it.”
Mahomes Sr. also expressed his gratitude to his wife, Trisha Mahomes, Patrick II’s stepmother, saying, “Trisha Mahomes, thanks for all you do.”
The Instagram post included a somewhat puzzling photo from a celebrity golf tournament, featuring Mahomes Sr. alongside baseball legend Pete Rose.
This isn’t Mahomes Sr.’s first run-in with the law for DWI.
In 2019, he served a 40-day sentence for a similar offense.
His most recent arrest, however, has not been publicly addressed by his son, Patrick Mahomes II.
When asked about it in Las Vegas ahead of his second Super Bowl victory, the younger Mahomes responded, “It’s a family matter, so I’ll keep it to the family. That’s all I have to say.”
As a divorced father of four, Mahomes Sr. spent 11 seasons in Major League Baseball, primarily as a reliever, and posted a career ERA of 5.34.
