Leylah Fernandez opened up and also joked about the harsh reality of being a tennis player and receiving hate even in winning her matches. She couldn’t finish her second round yesterday due to rain at the French Open.
She was 5-3 up against Xiyu Wang when a heavy downpour put a stop to any play aside from the showcourts. In the first round, Fernandez was emphatic as she thrashed Jessika Ponchet 6-2, 60 in just over an hour.
The Canadian shared a clip though of herself in an ice bath recovering after a three set match against Anastasia Potapova and how in reality she takes her sisters advice about dealing with hate as even in victory, she deals with it.
She sarcastically called the hate ‘beautiful’ messages before quipping that she only laughs at these people as they have no life. As well as that in reality, she should be the one giving her younger sister who came up with analogy advice and not vice versa. It could be said though that she isn’t winning too many matches.
She lost to Sloane Stephens in Charleston, Ons Jabeur in Madrid and Ana Bogdan in Rome in three early losses. She defeated Anastasia Potapova for the second time in the past month in Strasbourg. But lost to Liudmila Samsonova next round. So it has been very much stop start.
“On my Instagram, I’m just reading messages. I won, but still the same beautiful as if I have lost. It’s fine. The only thing I gotta do is smile and just enjoy those messages,” Leylah Fernandez said.
“My sister said it best. That’s people who have no life. Laugh at them and that’s it. You keep living your life, so that’s it. My younger sister has great advice and she’s only like 20. I was supposed to be giving her advices, not the other way around.”
