Jannik Sinner has qualified for his first career semifinal at the US Open, after a victory in 4 sets against Daniil Medvedev. What many have indicated as a challenge that came too early, was won by the Italian tennis player, who triumphed with the result of 6-2 1-6 6-1 6-4.
The Italian has gone through a complicated period in his career also because of the doping accusations, which emerged at the end of August but which concerned a positive test for clostebol found during the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Jannik was found innocent by the independent tribunal, but that wasn’t enough to keep the judgment of many insiders, or his colleagues, at bay, who didn’t take the decision well.
One of these was undoubtedly Nick Kyrgios, his main detractor in the affair.
“He should have been banned for two years. I’m not going to be as friendly with him as I was before when I’m in the dressing room. I have nothing against Sinner on a personal level. He’s one of the greatest tennis players we have right now, and I know how valuable he will be for the next 15 years. But if you look at Jenson Brooksby, players who have had their careers taken away for a year, and someone like Sinner who has done his own thing. I think for the most part he’s been right about his condition. I don’t think that’s been fair and equal for the rest of the tour,” told the Australian.
Unexpectedly, the Australian tennis player, through a post, returned to talk about the Italian, this time without any hints of venom, but focusing only on Jannik’s victory against Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals of the US Open.
“It’s not easy to manage everything that happens and continue to perform at this level. He is definitely the favorite now,” wrote Nick, after watching his match against the Russian, won in four sets.
Kyrgios is in his own way one of the protagonists of this edition at Flushing Meadows. Although the date of his return to the court is still a question mark, the Canberra native, as also happened at WImbledon, is enjoying himself between the commentary booth and interviews on the sidelines.
