Alexander Zverev had to say goodbye, once again, to the Slam dream, this time at the US Open, despite the great opportunity to reach the final.
The German, in the bottom-half – the same side that saw Novak Djokovic exit in the third round – saw his dreams of winning a Major dashed again. It was Taylor Fritz who interrupted the German’s path in the quarterfinals; the American who then surrendered to Jannik Sinner in the final.
Nicolas Mahut, in an interview with Eurosport, explained what Zverev needs to achieve the success he so desires.
“The years go by. I think he has no doubts. He is convinced that he will be able to win a Slam. Personally, I think so too. But he will have to change his game and be a little more offensive. And when matches don’t go as expected, he has to find solutions. He has to make an example of Jannik Sinner, think about how he plays. That’s all the work he has to do to win those two or three matches that make a big difference,” explained the Franchman.
The German has therefore failed to unlock himself in 2024 and will have to wait until next season to try to break a taboo that is becoming more and more pressing.
“I didn’t do anything to deserve the victory, it’s simple. I played terribly from the baseline. I don’t remember hitting my backhand that badly since I turned pro. I have no words to describe what happened. I don’t know what to say right now. I have no answer. I don’t think I’ve ever been as angry as I am right now,” explained Zverev after the quarterfinal loss in New York against Fritz.
