“Not very demure or mindful” – Iga Swiatek hops on to trend in response to her ‘over the shoulder’ shot during US Open 2024 2R win

Iga Swiatek hopped on to the ‘very demure, very mindful’ trend in response to her ‘over the shoulder’ shot during the second round of the 2024 US Open. The Pole won the match against Ena Shibahara to advance into the third round.

Swiatek was almost flawless in her 6-0, 6-1 win over doubles specialist Shibahara. The match lasted just 65 minutes and helped the Pole extend her record to 20-0 against players ranked outside of the Top 100 at Grand Slam events.After the match, an official WTA photographer posted some images on X of the World No. 1 playing an impressive shot over her shoulder while almost doing a split. They captioned the post:

“Over the shoulder….because she can.”

Swiatek took note of the images and hilariously wrote:

“Not very demure or mindful 🫠”

‘Very demure, very mindful’ is a social media trend started by TikToker Jools LeBron. Early in August, Lebron created videos where she advised her followers how to stay demure” in different situations. Other social media accounts jumped onto the ‘demure’ bandwagon and started a trend.Meanwhile, Swiatek has set up a third-round clash against 25th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova at the New York Major.

Iga Swiatek played just one preparatory tournament ahead of the 2024 US Open. Following her bronze medal triumph at the Paris Olympics, she participated in the Cincinnati Open and put up an impressive display to reach the semifinal but was ousted by eventual winner Aryna Sabalenka.

At the New York Major, an event she won in 2022, Swiatek is yet to lose a set this year. She defeated Kamilla Rakhimova 6-4, 7-6(8) before ousting Ena Shibahara 6-0, 6-1. The World No. 1 set up a third-round clash against World No. 27, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.The Russian defeated Taylah Preston 6-2, 6-0 and Elisabetta Cocciaretto 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, to reach the third round. This will be the second encounter between Swiatek and Pavlyuchenkova. Their first match was in Rome last year and the Pole decimated the Russian 6-0, 6-0.

Notably, this is Swiatek’s 19th consecutive Grand Slam third-round appearance. Only the likes of Martina Navratilova, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, Stefanie Graf, and Conchita Martinez have achieved such a feat on the WTA Tour.The winner between Swiatek and Pavlyuchenkova will take on either 16th seed Liudmila Samsonova or Ashlyn Krueger in the fourth round of the US Open.
