The NFL star’s father was arrested on Saturday
The father of NFL star Patrick Mahomes was found driving with an open can of beer near the driver’s seat before he was stopped and arrested by police for driving under the influence.
Mahomes Sr was stopped by police after his vehicle was seen to have been driving slower than the other traffic in the area during a routine patrol.
According to an affidavit from the Smith County Sheriff’s Office in Texas, Patrick Mahomes Sr had a 16-ounce can of Coors beer in the center console when he stopped at about 20:00 on Saturday.
The ex-baseball player, 53, told police that he “had a few beers while watching a game at a local bar” when asked why he was drinking while driving, per the affidavit.
The arresting officer on the scene cited probable cause as he was under the impression that Mahomes Sr was “impaired” after driving while intoxicated, after he agreed to undergo sobriety tests at the scene.
The document, according to the New York Post, read: “Based on the totality of the circumstances, I believed Patrick was impaired to a perceptible degree while operating a motor vehicle in a public place.”

It was the third DWI he has received after he was also cited in 2008 and 2019, per police records. A third DWI conviction can result in a sentence of up to 10 years and a $10,000 in the state of Texas.
Mahomes Sr was released on bail on Sunday after posting his $10,000 bail.
An unwanted distraction
Mahomes is a former MLB pitcher who spent time with the Mets before retiring from baseball in 2003. His son, Patrick Mahomes II, is a two-time Super Bowl winner and quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs.
It is not the first time Mahomes has discovered his father had been arrested after the second instance occurred in 2019, and frankly, the timing couldn’t be worse.
The 28-year-old is only five days away from the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on February 11, where he is aiming to claim his third Super Bowl ring.
Naturally, questions will be asked about his father’s detention when Mahomes would be wanting to focus entirely on what happens on the football field, proving to be an unwanted distraction in the lead up to the biggest game of the year.
