PAULA BADOSA RETURNS TO AUSTRALIAN OPEN WITH SUPERB DISPLAY TO SWEEP TOWNSEND, SET TO FACE PAVLYUCHENKOVA NEXT

Paula Badosa has qualified for the second round of the Australian Open after defeating American Taylor Townsend 6-1/6-3. Now she will have to face the Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the second round in Melbourne.

Badosa started her return in the Australian Open strong against Townsend, taking advantage of the first break opportunity she had to take 2-1 and serve. Then, she saved three break balls with her serve to go 3-1 up.

Cornered on court 6, slowly but surely aware of her new status on the WTA circuit until she earns a better position, the Brooklyn native continued to be aggressive in the return game to take a 4-1 lead in a first set in which she was playing the game she wanted to play.

In the next game Badosa displayed her best tennis and secured her second break to place 5-1 on the scoreboard. Badosa continued to deploy her game, chipping away against her rival and ended up closing the first set with 6-1 and very good feelings.

SECOND SET.

In the second set a concentrated Paula Badosa started winning her serve to ensure she started ahead in the set. Likewise, she continued very aggressive in the rest against a Townsend who seemed to have no answers to hurt her opponent.

There was no retort from Townsend as Badosa was already 3-0 up in the second set and easing towards the finishing line.

And finally, after a very long game, Townsend won again and put the 3-1 in the second set. Paula reacted well, continued with her game and then went into a 4-1 lead. Spectacular game of the Catalan, with great confidence.

Townsend then played her best game of the match, being aggressive with her forehand and managing to surprise her opponent. But this proved a mere consolation as Paula did not fail with her serve and closed the second set and the match. Clear victory and continue to maintain the good tennis and good feelings against Pavlyuchenkova in the second round;
