BEING THE DEVIL’S plaything/prey leaves little time for levity, so when Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) got to have this full-body laugh at the expense of Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) it’s hard not to call it the highlight of the episode. The premise is that Frankenstein is looking for a dress for his visiting “cousin” Lily—actually the reanimated former girlfriend of Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett)—and needs Vanessa’s help. It’s all going fairly well until Vanessa reminds her shy (possibly virgin?) companion that they also need “undergarments” and dances with this red number while emitting the girliest laugh she’s ever released. The resolution, which featured Lily trying on the dress they picked out, was just as rewarding. “So women wear corsets if they don’t exert themselves?” Lily asked, wondering about the necessity of such a restrictive piece of clothing. “What would be the danger if they did?” Then Frankenstein gives the most surprising and feminist answer possible: “They’d take over the world.” (That GIF didn’t make it into this post, but you can find it here.)
