Holger Rune exited the 2024 Roland Garros in the last 16 stage, and he is set to further cascade in the ATP rankings.
Rune is one of the most talented young players on tour, with four ATP titles to his name. Last August, he rose to World No. 4, the highest ranking ever by a Danish male player.
That accomplishment followed a highly productive first half of 2023, during which he defended the Munich Open and was twice runner-up at two Masters tournaments in Monte Carlo and Rome.
Rune was a two-time quarterfinalist at the Grand Slam level last season at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, respectively. But his form fell off in the second half of 2023, and he failed to win a match from mid-July until late September.
He appointed Boris Becker to salvage his season, and the German tennis great did so in his role as interim coach, helping Rune qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin for the first time.
Despite Becker’s commitment to work with Rune in 2024, their partnership was surprisingly terminated at the start of February. Rune hasn’t quite hit the ground running this season while working with Patrick Mouratoglou, whom he appointed as his full-time coach in their second stint.
The Dane only reached one final, in 2024, where he lost to Grigor Dimitrov in Brisbane. He failed to retain his title in Munich after losing 6-0, 6-2 to Jan Lennard Struff.
Less than a year after rising to a career-high ranking of No. 4, Rune is set to drop even further when the new rankings are published on Monday, June 10th. He lost to Alexander Zverev in the fourth round of this year’s Roland Garros.
The 21-year-old will occupy 15th spot in the new rankings, a drop of 11 spots from August 2023. He is defending quarterfinal points at Wimbledon in the first two weeks of July. If he cannot turn it around, he could face a Top 20 exit.
