Tennis coach Brad Gilbert remains optimistic about the future of America’s young star, Coco Gauff, despite her disappointing outing at the US Open. The 20-year-old is already regarded as one of the best women’s tennis players in the singles category, along with Poland’s Iga Swiatek and Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka.
Gauff is going through a rough campaign. Her most recent outing was in the US Open where, while defending her title, she was knocked out after losing in the fourth round to fellow American Emma Navarro with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Before playing at the Flashing Meadows, she played in the Cincinnati Open where she was knocked out after losing in the first round to Yulia Putintseva with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Prior to Cincinnati, Gauff was knocked out of the Canadian Open after losing in the second round to Diana Shnaider in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-1. Before the Canadian Open, the Atlanta-born star participated in three different category in the Paris Olympics but unfortunately failed to win any medal for her country.
Gilber, who is currently working with Gauff as a head coach stated that there is still hope left for the youngster. He was of the opinion that despite the result, the current world number three has an impressive 14 months.
“It’s been a good 14 months,” he said. “She’s accomplished a lot and the great thing is, she has huge upside at 20. If she was a stock, you still put a buy rating on her. She’s a great kid. She works hard, and good things will happen for her. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a great tournament for her, but the player that beat her, Navarro, is playing great tennis. She’s in the semis. Who knows? Maybe she’s got a legitimate shot to win it.”
