Jannik Sinner won his first title as a world no. 1 player on the ATP Tour after beating Hubert Hurkacz in the 2024 Halle Open final.
The Italian came to the German city to prepare for the grass-court major at SW19, but his week didn’t get off well. Against Tallon Griekspoor, Fabian Marozsan, and Jan-Lennard Struff, he needed three sets to win.
In his semi-final match against Zhizhen Zhang, Sinner already won in straight sets, and he was able to replicate that result also in the final of the ATP 500 tournament in Halle.
Hurkacz, on the other hand, won all of his matches in Halle in straight sets, but his final opponent was just too good when it mattered. In the first set of the match, both players had one break point, but both were saved relatively easily.
Therefore, the opening set had to be decided in a tie-break, but despite getting a one-mini-break advantage twice, the world no. 1 player still allowed his opponent to have a set point in the first set of the final match.
Still, Sinner was able to win the crucial points and eventually win the opening-set tie-break 10-8 to lead after 54 minutes of play.
In the second set of play, the Italian player was much better on his serve, as this time around, he didn’t face a single break point, while having two break points himself already in the second game of the second set.
Still, after those remained unused, the second set, like the first one, was decided in a tie-break, but Sinner didn’t face any struggles this time. He got the first mini-break and then also the second, easily winning the tie-break 7-2 to win the match 7-6(8), 7-6(2), and lift his first title as the world no. 1 player on the ATP Tour.
