“I’m only here because we’re in Rome,” he said during the media day of the tournament.
Berrettini explained that he will try to do everything to get on the pitch in Rome and give himself a chance, reiterating however that he will only try to make it because we are talking about the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.
“It’s nice to be back in Rome. A lot has changed. I found everything improved, but the energy is still the same. It’s nice to find the support and energy that I’ve missed so much in recent years. Today was more of a refinement.
I haven’t been able to train much lately and I’m here because we are in Rome. I’m trying in every way to play, because three years have passed and I missed it so much. I’m giving it my all. It was a very complex preparation for the tournament and I’m trying. I would have liked to arrive in different conditions,” he told.
Berrettini expressed also about Sinner
Berrettini also talked out about Jannik Sinner, forced to miss Rome due to a hip injury.
“The tournament loses a lot. He is certainly the big absentee, but I think he is right. Unfortunately I have been in his shoes and I know what it means to miss this tournament. I know that he will return as a protagonist in the coming years and I hope he recovers soon.
The tournament took a beating, but that’s sport. It’s important to take care of your body and I hope to embrace it in person soon. What can I recommend to Jannik? Good question. Each of us is different.
What has happened to me personally is that in my career I have always suffered injuries, since I was a kid. I no longer had the energy to go back at a certain point. I was exhausted. Start asking yourself: ‘can I play?’ and also ‘how will I play?’ it’s hard.
For him maybe it’s different. I think it’s followed very well and that injuries are part of tennis. He has to think about his future and he made the right choice. He is an example for me and for everyone else,” analyzed Berrettini.
Berrettini then talked about the challenge that awaits him in the first round against his countryman Stefano Napolitano.
“We’ve known each other for a long time, we’re more or less the same age. It will be a complex match for both of us. I haven’t played here for three years and he’s doing well. It’s never easy for an Italian to play in Rome.
Ranking differences do not matter when playing here. We’ve also been writing to each other lately and I’m glad we’re finding continuity,” he explained.
