Danielle Collins retired at 4-1 down in the final set against Iga Swiatek but it wasn’t a match without controversy at the Olympic Games. As one social media user coined it, the American ‘nearly killed’ the World Number One.
At the start of the final set, Collins seemed to have had enough of Swiatek’s perceived antics and decided to smash her return. But she aimed it seemingly directly at the World No.1.
It hit her square in the chest and knocked the wind out of her flooring her. Collins eventually went to the other side of the net to console the World No.1 but retired only five games later. The American said to the umpire that ‘there’s no way I can play’. Whether this is down to her rheumatoid arthritis, it is unsure.
But Collins had a stern word with Swiatek when she retired leaving the Pole shocked who will now face off against Qinwen Zheng to move into the medal match. It also means only Tommy Paul remains in terms of American singles players in the tournament.
Swiatek seemed to annoy Collins through taking extended toilet breaks and it seemed to take away all momentum from the American who went on to retire from the tie in what is her final Olympic Games. But Swiatek stoking the fire in this instance didn’t see her receive the best response from Collins whether intentional or not.
