Daniil Medvedev is back to delivering great rants as this time the Russian tennis star complained about the hawkeye technology in Beijing and wondered why the ATP was paying for it.
Today, the third-seeded Russian took on No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz in the China Open semifinal. With the two tied at 5-5 through the opening 10 games, the 2021 US Open champion wanted a replay of the shot to be shown on the big screen. But to his disappointment, he was told that they were experiencing some technical issues so therefore it wasn’t possible to grant his request.
Medvedev then got broken to love and made sure the organizers would hear it.
“Why (does) the ATP pay Hawkeye then? Hawkeye sucks, no? Don’t trust Hawkeye. Not my sponsor,” he was heard ranting.
Medvedev loses after the incident
When the match resumed, Alcaraz routinely served out for the first set before also breaking the world No. 5 in the fifth and ninth games of the second set to complete a 7-5 6-3 win. However, the 28-year-old refused to be negative after the loss.
“Tough match for me because I felt that I played really well. I felt that, yeah, there were a lot of good, positive things for me. At the same time, yeah, it’s very, very tough to play Carlos when he’s in top form. So yeah, I played pretty good match. I lost. That’s not that often it happens to me. Against top players it can happen. Yeah, not much more I can say,” Medvedev reflected.
Now, the Russian’s focus turns on the Shanghai Masters, where he won the title in 2019.
Going into the upcoming Masters tournament in China, the former world No. 1 said that he was happy that he was able to win three matches in Beijing and that he hopes he can continue with fine form in Shanghai.
In Shanghai, Medvedev is the No. 5 seed and has a first-round bye before facing either Thiago Seyboth Wild or a qualifier.
