Alexander Zverev was a man of few words following his second-round win at Wimbledon, where he fielded just one question.
Zverev defeated Marcos Giron in straight sets on Thursday on Court 1, tallying 12 aces in the match and winning 88% first-serve points. He was equally impressive on his return, breaking the American six times from eight opportunities.
After the match, the German fulfilled media obligations in front of a group of journalists, who, surprisingly, refrained from asking him any questions. It’s unknown what their motive was, but the moderator stepped in to ask him to assess his performance in the match. Zverev only used 17 words.
“It was good, good match. Good level. All in all, [I’m] happy with being through in straight sets.”
The awkward interaction with reporters lasted only a few minutes before the press conference ended. It is Zverev’s second straight-sets win of the week. He beat Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena for the loss of only eight games.
He will face a significant upgrade in the third round when he takes on former British No. 1 Cameron Norrie. The bright side of facing Norrie is that he leads their head-to-head 5-0 in ATP meetings and won their Australia Open clash this year in five sets.
Zverev’s relationship with tennis journalists has been frosty in recent months following allegations of domestic abuse by his former girlfriend, and he had to plead with them to abstain from bringing up the topic after his matches. The case has since been dropped.
The fourth seed will attempt to improve on his modest record at SW19. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament he has yet to reach the semifinals. He has been to the fourth round on two occasions, the most recent one being in 2021, when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime in five sets.
